Brela, The Islet next to the Beach Brela, the best known summer resort of the Makarska littoral, is situated near the Adriatic highway, 14 km away from Makarska in the direction of Split. It consists of several smaller places known for their developed tourist facilities and attractive entertainment programmes. Its pebble beaches are a few kilometres long and they extend themselves along the sea, which received, for its cleanness, the blue flag - the international mark of high quality for the protection of the environment.

Makarska Riviera is a part of Dalmatian coast of Adriatic, about 60 kilometers long and only several kilometers wide, squeezed under towering mountain Biokovo. Sunny climate and long pebbly beaches make this region a popular tourist destination.
Brela, a town next to the sea is a municipality with 1770 inhabitants. Brela has become one of the most exclusive and most wanted tourist destinations in Dalmatia during the last few decades of the 20th century thanks to the attractive natural environment, clean pebble and sand beaches, romantically arranged along a side where a promenade swerves between pine trees and modernly comfortable hotels, guest houses, apartments, boarding houses, catering and other modern tourist facilities.

The town of Berulia, mentioned also by Constantine Porphyrogenitus (10th c.), emerged at this location. The present town developed in recent times by migration of the population from small villages and hamlets under Biokovo Mountain. The parish church from the 19th century was built on the location of an earlier Baroque church, next to the cemetery is the mediaeval necropolis with eight tombstones adorned with reliefs. The church houses several tombstones from the 18th century.

The history of Brela goes back for more than 2 millenniums. In this beautiful landscape are still held many attractions from ancient times. The first protector of this Adriatic oasis was Silvan - Illyrian-Roman god of forests and pristine nature.
Brela is an attractive village set on a beautiful full six kilometers of white pebbly beach and is surrounded by fig trees, olive groves and lovely pine woods. The beach at Brela slopes gently into the safe blue sea making it an ideal place for family holidays with children. Setting is spectacular: white pebbles underneath the huge Biokovo maintain.
Forbes magazine recently ranked Brela's beaches in the top 20 of the world.
The most popular beaches are Punta Rata and Berulija, both awarded with Blue Flag.

Brela also provides a wonderful coastal promenade which hosts a number of excellent seafood restaurants. Accommodations in Brela are of the highest quality, which has been attested to by opinion polls which rank Brela’s hotels among Croatia’s very best.
Aside from swimming and sunbathing, Brela also provides a significant number of sports and recreational opportunities. Local restaurants serve sensational local and international cuisine. In addition, cultural and entertainment programs are offered during the high tourist season.
Also, excursions are also regularly organized.
An old village on the slopes of Biokovo - once the original Brela settlement, has become an attractive place for one-day excursions and visits of holidaymakers coming there to admire beautiful views on the sea and off shore islands or taste delicious healthy food dishes in indigenous village restaurants and wine cellars.
There are other places of interest worth visiting on daily excursions: Makarska, Tučepi, Podgora close by, the Park of Nature Biokovo with its rare, protected plants and three alpine houses situated under the mountain peaks.
