Cavtat is a town of beautiful palaces, summer houses and hotels, mild climate, rich
vegetation, beautiful beaches and bays. The town of beautiful beaches (stony, rocky,
concrete and sandy beaches) and luxurious hotels together with a traditional life and
preserved customs is waiting for you. It has 7 km long promenades through dense pine
forest will give you unforgettable moments of relaxation. Cavtat is a town that lives
for tourism, therefore families as well as young people will find something for
themselves here.
In ancient times, Cavtat was known as Epidaurum, while the current name of Cavtat
comes from 'Civitas Vetus'. In 614 the Slavs penetrated into Cavtat, forcing
the majority to move to Dubrovnik.
In the 15th century, Dubrovnik purchased the town of Cavtat from Duke Pavlovic and Cavtat
became the second center and had an important role in the social life of the Republic.
The greater part of the historical - cultural monuments belong to the simple but
beautiful architecture of the post-René period, with gothic traces: the Princes Palace,
the fortresses, the town-walls built around the city, the public squares, the church
of Saint Nicholas, the church of the Maid of Cavtat and the Franciscan convent.
The old town of Cavtat, in the very centre of the South Adriatic, is situated at the south slopes of the peninsula
of Rat, in the immediate vicinity of Dubrovnik, 20 km to the southeast from it.Today Cavtat is the tourist and
cultural centre of Konavle, the southernmost region of Croatia. This is the town of beautiful beaches and luxury
hotels together with a traditional way of life and preserved customs.
The Racic Family Mausoleum is on top of a steep, wooded hill at the very tip of the peninsula
on which the town rests. Unexpectedly - especially for people arriving from the comparative
bustle of the quayside - the whole of this end of the peninsula is given over to semi-wild
parkland, heavily scented with herbs and flowers. In just minutes you've stepped from an
artificial forest of yacht masts into a living Arcadia.
This octagonal white dome with huge bronze doors decorated with gargoyles of dogs, eagles
and winged lambs, was built high above Cavtat in the early 1920s by the Croatian sculptor
Ivan Mestrovic.
Cavtat Map
Through the airport of Dubrovnik, Cavtat has excellent connections with the entire world.
Local ship and bus lines connect the city with the towns nearby. Apart from a broad
range of
accommodation facilities in hotels, pensions,
apartments, the rich culinary offerings of the coast and the hinterland, pictorial
walking tracks and attractions like an open air museum, there are available to guests
various leisure activities: tennis, fitness, aerobics, saunas,
as well as many different kinds of water sports.
An excursion to the cave Sipun is also worth taking.
The birth house of Vlaho Bukovac
The birth house of one of the most famous Croatian painters was proclaimed a cultural
monument in 1969. The architecture, the fact that it is located in the very heart of
Cavtat as well as the artistic legacy of the painter, make this house a true cultural
pearl. The appearance of the house is not much different than the rest of the houses
built in Cavtat towards the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, even
though the painter himself made a few touch-ups.
The Racic Family Mausoleum
Visiting the mausoleum of the Racic family, a well-known shipowners, you will
witness the symbolism which represents the lifetime of humans: birth, life and death.
The entire mausoleum is built using white stone from the island of Brac.
The mausoleum is located in a beautifull area near the sea between the cypress trees,
and was designed by the famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
Knezev dvor -The Collection of Baltazar Bogisic
Baltazar Bogisic (1834-1908) was a lawyer and scientist with a significant European
reputation. Throughout his career, he collected various artifacts and documents. Today
the Collection contains more than 35,000 objects. The numismatic collection particularly
stands out with 2,700 objects. There is also an important library dating back to that
period.
Bogisic's collection is located at Knezev dvor (Rector's Palace), an interesting
monument of Renaissance architecture from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic.
Franciscan Monastery
The church and monastery are at the north end of Cavtat harbor at the bottom of the
hill on which Ivan Mestrovic's Racic Mausoleum stands. The monastery recently was
converted to an 8-room bed-and-breakfast, and guests can explore the adjoining church
at their leisure. Look for the church's medieval altarpieces and the remains of what may
be an ancient Roman amphitheater nearby.
Inside, you'll find a 16th-century triptych by artist Vicko Lovrin.
