Hvar, View from Fortress The main city of Hvar, which shares the name of the island, is a small and peaceful medieval town with only 4,000 inhabitants. However, during the busiest season of tourism, the medieval streets and lovely beaches of Hvar host more tourists than local people, which makes the cityscape of Hvar quite international, with luxury yachts and international restaurants.

The name HVAR is without doubt Greek in origin, from Pharos (lighthouse). From it the Romans derived the name Pharia. The Dalmatian Romans then derived from this Fara, and the newly settled Croats in the early Middle Ages changed this to Hvar.
Hvar, the island in Adriatic Sea , is the longest and the sunniest Croatian island and one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is a part of the central Dalmatian archipelago with the area of 299.6 sq km (length 68.2 km, width up to 10.5 km) and population of 11,459 inhabitants. Hvar Island is administratively part of the Split-Dalmatia county in Dalmatia, Croatia.

The island is characterised by gentle winters, warm summers and many hours of sunshine. Gentle and moist winters (January Hvar has an average temperature of 8.4° C) have many advantages, long other things enabling winter tourism in Hvar. Hvar has an annual average of 7.7 hours sunshine per day and 3.8 hours of cloud.

Hvar, Palace Hektorovic
Wine, lavender and honey have long been the main peasants' produce in Hvar. Wine from Hvar and other Dalmatian areas were successfully exported to France and then Hungary from 1870 until 1894, when phylloxera devastated the majority of Dalmatian vine yards. Then, in the first decades of the 20th century large numbers of islanders emigrated to North and South America. People from Hvar became the pioneers of wine growing in California and still participate a great deal in the production of wine there. Today economy is based on tourism, fishing, farming, viticulture, olive growing and especially on cultivation of rosemary and lavender.

Friendly people, well-indented coast, numerous picturesque and intact beaches and bays, virgin nature, very rich historical and cultural inheritance, the scents of lavender, olive trees and wine are the reasons that island Hvar welcomes more and more tourists each year.

What to see?
St. Stephen's Cathedral
Constructed in the Venetian style and looking like a theatre is the impressive edifice of St. Stephen's Cathedral, a very important religious site which overlooks the main square of Hvar. A close examination of its features will reveal its resemblance to the Renaissance- baroque style.

The Fortress 'Spanjola'
An important historic site of Hvar Croatia situated on the pinnacle of a hill, the Fortress or Fortezza Spanjola is worth touring, as it offers some of the most comprehensive perspectives of the town. Interestingly, you may also come across a rare collection of weapons including cannons as you browse through the Fortress. Constructed by Ilirians almost 2000 years ago, the Fortress is indeed a cardinal location of the island.

Old city
The night-panorama of this city becomes charming, because all the artistic patrimony is illuminated and everything appears like a great crip. The pedestrian area of the entire centre invites to go out and to enjoy the walks on along sea.
The city is full of original stores where local handicraft souvenirs can be bought, such as lavender and rosemary essence, a true tradition of this island that from the ancient times is called the lavender and rosemary island.

Franciscan Monastery
The Franciscan monastery was built in 15th century as a retreat for sailors. Within the monastery there are the artifacts exhibited in the monastery collection which is also the oldest on the island. It consists of paintings, manuscripts, old coins and incunabula.
