Together with his father Nicolas and his uncle Maffeo, Marco Polo was amongst the first Europeans to travel the famous Silk Road trade route, stretching from the Middle East to China. According to a local tradition, Marco Polo was born at Korcula in 1254 to an established family of merchants, although there is no irrefutable proof of this claim. The alleged house of birth is under the protection of the Korcula Town Hall and it will soon be turned into a Museum of Marco Polo. | |
