Makarska, Biokovo mountain MAKARSKA, a town, port and tourist centre in a large cove, enclosed by Cape Osejava in the south-east, and the Sveti Petar (St. Peter) Peninsula, at the foot of Biokovo, in the north-west. The climate is Mediterranean; the strong bora occurs in the winter months. Economy is based on farming, viniculture, growing and processing of olives, food processing, processing of synthetic materials, seafaring, fishing and tourism.

Biokovo Mountain has very interesting geomorphological forms and endemic plant species. High game (moufflons and chamois) is amply represented here.

The beach promenade of Makarska along the coastal region known as Makarska Riviera is fringed by palm trees, and it is here you can find many cafes with terraces, trendy boutiques and restaurants in Makarska. The pebble beaches of Makarska are great for sunbathing, swimming and water sports, such as paragliding, sailing and diving in Makarska.

What to see?
Town Museum (Villa Tonolli)
Located in the eastern part of the old nucleus of Makarska, the late baroque villa of the eminent Tonolli family which today houses the Town Museum, and a multitude of richly ornamented facades of family houses, mostly built in the times of Venetian rule.

Makarska city square
On the square there is the baroque parish church of St. Marko from the 18th century, baroque fountain from the 1775, and the most beautiful baroque building in the town the Ivanišević Palace. There is also a sculpture of the Franciscan poet, Andrija Kačić-Miočić.

Makarska Riva
On the coast there is baroque church of St. Filip Neri and the building of the former monastery of St. Philip. In the courtyard of the church there are a few grave-stones. The monument in the shape of a pyramid was raised in honor of the marshal Marmont.

Franciscan monastery
Today, on the location of the former Benedictine abbey, is the Franciscan monastery with cloister from 1400, renovated in 1540. The old, monastery church with one nave and baroque balfry from 1715, has the painting. The Assumption of Our Lady from 1760, on the main altar. In the cellars of the monastery there is the Malacological Museum with very rich collection of shells (about 10,000 items). The monastery has a library, archive, and rich collection of art objects and paintings from the period of Baroque.
